As a newborn and baby photographer, I would love to be able to follow month by month the progress and growth of each of the babies that come through the door. Every new baby that comes into the studio makes my heart melt. And it is so pleasing to see them once again when they come back after a couple of months for a new photoshoot. However, most families cannot afford to hire a photographer every month.
Babies change by the minute, their growth during the first few months is accelerated and they go through so many stages during so little time. So for those moms that are not able to have a professional photoshoot every month, there are a couple of tips that will make pictures better.
- Find a good source of light
Photography is all about light, so look for the best natural light and have your baby play in that area while you are a paparazzi. It can be close to a window or a very lit area at home.
- Play with your angles
Once you find a well-lit area pretend you are your baby’s paparazzi. Take pictures with the light in front of the baby, a little on their side and you will create different effects. You may even do some backlit shots, where the light is behind you baby and you may get some cool silhouettes or a cool fade in the picture.
- Think about the background
Being a mom means having toys available everywhere. Some may make great backgrounds but some may not. So keep in mind what is in your background and remove anything that may distract the attention from the baby.
- Go with the babies flow
Keeping the baby entertained is an important part of the shoot, the happier the baby is the better the pictures will be. It’s hard to pose babies or to get a specific pose, so just go with whatever they are doing that makes them happy. Natural pictures are as pretty as posed ones and they are also great memories.
I know most parents want pictures with smiles, however, sometimes just a look or a picture of them playing even if they are not looking at the camera can be a great photograph. Don’t be afraid to shoot when they are not looking or giving you a funny face.
Play with the pictures you took. Nowadays there are plenty of apps that allow you to edit your pictures, so go for that interesting B&W or try a more saturated filter to make your pictures your own.
As a photographer, of course, I still recommend to have professional photos every now and then, since there’s nothing like it, but I understand it’s not possible to do it as often so give yourself a chance and try. It can be a fun moment for both mom and baby. 🙂
